If I were to play 4' 33" by John Cage, would it be a perfect recital, because I am not a virtuoso pianist? Or can it be played on any instrument, in which case, as I can whistle tunefully, I could whistle it? True, all music needs the gap between notes to define the notes and give the timings - take away the notes and you are left with the real essence of the music.
I might just give a rendition of it now: sit very still, very quiet and empty your mind. Can you hear it? I'm playing now. I really am. The piece sounds as good or better than I've heard anyone else perform it (if I say so myself). I hope you agree.
I am a virtuoso after all!
