Wheeldale Roman Road

Wheeldale Roman road remains in situ on the Yorkshire moors. Archaeologists remain undecided if it is actually Roman, pre Roman or post Roman,  but it has certainly survived for some considerable time.  Makes a good walk to continue along and across the dale,  with real stepping stones across the beck.  Even saw a peregrine and slow worm,  so good for wildlife as well.

Large stones which were probably the base layer (or top paving?) still remain in situ. Ditches can be seen at each side of a cambered road surface.
