From the top of the lighthouse at the harbour entrance.

Birthplace of Horror

This is the view from the spot in Whitby that inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula.

Old Railway

Track of Whitby to Scarborough railway running down into Robin Hood's Bay. Closed in 1966, fifty years ago. Would have been a scenic journey.

Arguments Yard

In Whitby. Wonder how it got its name?

Whitby Harbour

Fishing boats in port on a cold Noth Sea autumn day. This was the harbour where Dracula landed in Bram Stoker's novel -  the abbey can be seen on the hill behind.

Whitby Cliff Collapse

Mud and soil landslip below St. Mary's church at Whitby, which happened last week. It has been stabilised and fortunately does not appear to be threatening the church, even though bones from the graveyard had to be re-interred after they fell into the gardens below. Just as importantly, the buildings underneath are safe at the moment as well, since they include Fortune's smokery, which has been there for over 160 years and produces the best kippers anywhere using the original traditional method!

Whitby Lighthouses

Lighthouses at the entrance to Whitby harbour. The larger tower on the left (West Pier) was built in 1831 and the smaller one (East Pier) in 1855.  Both were replaced by the harbour lights on the wooden pier extensions in 1914, West Pier showing a green light,  East Pier a red one. The lights are visible for about three miles in clear conditions.   Oh dear, am I becoming a lighthouse spotter? Don't answer that!

Kippers Cooked

Kippers for breakfast - smoked yesterday, eaten this morning.  Couldn't be any better.

Whitby Kippers

Freshly smoked herring in Fortunes' smokery. Amongst the best kippers in England (and Scotland) but only available from the shop. Worth a trip to Whitby on a damp cold autumn day. Only if you like kippers, that is.  In case you are wondering, the thing at bottom left is a piece of bacon.
